Training Pads

What we line Heidi's crate and sleeping area with for incontinence care.

Training pads are the other half of the incontinence setup — diapers manage what’s on the dog, pads manage what’s under the dog. Any time Heidi is resting in her crate, on her bed, or in a supervised spot on the floor, there’s a pad underneath. When there’s an accident, you swap the pad and the surface stays clean.

The practical value here isn’t glamorous, but it compounds quickly. A soiled memory foam bed is hard to clean and impossible to dry quickly. A pad that cost a dollar absorbs the moisture and gets thrown away. For dogs with full urinary incontinence, you’re doing multiple changes a day — pads make that sustainable.

Size matters. A standard puppy pad works for small dogs, but for a dog who repositions during the night, you want something larger so it’s still under them when they’ve shifted. Many caregivers use two-pad coverage under their dog’s sleeping area for exactly this reason.

Absorbency and leak-through protection vary significantly by brand. The thin budget pads will leak through onto whatever surface is underneath once they’re saturated — which defeats the purpose. Look for pads with a plastic backing and multi-layer absorbent core. The premium brands cost more but absorb significantly more and don’t leave a wet surface after saturation.

I also use pads when manually expressing Heidi’s bladder — they make cleanup much easier. If your vet has taught you bladder expression and you’re doing it at home, having pads on hand is just part of the setup.

Good For

  • Under the dog's sleeping area to protect bedding and crate floors
  • During manual bladder expression to absorb the output
  • As a secondary layer of protection paired with diapers overnight

Not Ideal For

  • As the primary incontinence management for an active dog — use diapers for mobility
