Stool Hardener

The companion to Heidi's cranberry chews — they go together as a system, not separately.

If you read the cranberry chews page, you already know the setup: cranberry chews are useful for UTI prevention in incontinent dogs, but they cause softer stools as a side effect. If your dog also has fecal incontinence — which is common in dogs with significant IVDD or DM — softer stools make that dramatically harder to manage. Cleanup is messier, skin contact with fecal material is longer, and the risk of perineal skin irritation goes up. The stool hardener is what you add to counteract that softening effect.

I recommend these two products together because in practice you rarely want one without the other once you’re dealing with combined urinary and fecal incontinence. If you only have urinary incontinence and your dog has normal solid stools, you may not need the stool hardener — but if you introduce cranberry chews and notice stool consistency changing, add it.

Stool hardeners for dogs are typically fiber-based. The same principle that makes fiber useful for humans with loose stools applies here — it adds bulk and absorbs excess moisture in the colon, producing a firmer result. Look for psyllium husk-based products or fiber supplements specifically labeled for dogs. Plain unflavored psyllium (the active ingredient in many human fiber supplements) is sometimes used at veterinarian-recommended doses, but consult your vet before doing that, as dosing varies by dog size.

A side note independent of the cranberry pairing: stool hardeners are also useful for dogs who have fecal incontinence on their own, for any reason. Firmer stools are simply easier to manage for both the dog and the caregiver. For a dog who wears diapers or rests on training pads, the practical difference is significant.

Good For

  • Counteracting the stool-softening side effect of cranberry chews
  • Dogs with fecal incontinence who need firmer stools for easier management
  • Paired with cranberry chews as a complete UTI-prevention and incontinence system

Not Ideal For

  • Dogs with normal bowel function who don't use cranberry chews
  • Dogs with constipation or slow motility (consult vet first)
