Medium Dog Cage

The crate Heidi used during her IVDD conservative management rest period.

Crate rest for IVDD is not optional. If your dog has been prescribed conservative management — meaning no surgery, rest only — the crate is the treatment. The confinement is what allows the disc to stabilize, the spinal inflammation to reduce, and the nerves to begin whatever recovery they’re capable of. A dog left to move freely during this period risks re-injury from a jump, a stumble, or just the wrong twist. The cage is not a punishment; it’s medical equipment.

The right size matters in a specific way: the cage should be large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around comfortably, and no larger. The goal is restricted movement, not zero movement. A cage that’s too large gives the dog room to build momentum — and a running start at a jump or sudden pivot is exactly what you’re trying to prevent. A cage that’s too small causes distress and discomfort. Medium is typically right for most dachshunds and dogs in the 10–30 pound range.

Wire crates are preferable to plastic airline crates for crate rest: better airflow, easier cleaning, and you can see the dog without disturbing them (and they can see you, which reduces anxiety). A crate cover can help a nervous dog settle by reducing visual stimulation.

Inside the crate: a memory foam pad or orthopedic mat, flat on the floor. A water bowl that attaches to the crate bars so it can’t be knocked over and create a wet surface. No toys that could encourage jumping or wrestling. Bedding that you can wash frequently — you will be washing it frequently.

Crate rest typically runs four to eight weeks for conservative IVDD management, depending on severity and your vet’s guidance. It’s a long time. Short supervised breaks for bathroom and brief stretching are usually built into the protocol. Follow your vet’s specific instructions — every case is different.

Good For

  • IVDD conservative management — the crate is the core treatment
  • Post-surgery recovery when movement restriction is prescribed
  • Any time your vet has prescribed strict rest

Not Ideal For

  • Long-term full-time confinement without a medical reason
  • Giant breeds or dogs over approximately 50 pounds (would need a large crate)
