Dog Wipes
How we keep Heidi clean between baths during daily incontinence care.
When you’re managing incontinence daily, wipes become part of a routine you do many times a day. Every diaper change involves cleaning the perineal area before putting on the new diaper — otherwise you’re trapping bacteria against skin that’s already vulnerable. Dog wipes make that fast and easy without the logistics of a bath each time.
The main thing to look for is fragrance-free. Scented wipes might seem better because they smell cleaner, but fragrance ingredients are common irritants on skin that’s already being stressed by moisture and diapers. Fragrance-free is better for sensitive skin, and an incontinent dog’s skin is by definition sensitive skin.
Thickness matters more than you’d think. Thin wipes tear during use, which means you’re using more of them per change and they don’t clean as effectively. Look for a thicker, more durable wipe. Bamboo-based wipes are generally denser than standard cotton and hold up better under pressure.
Alcohol-free is another thing to check. Some wipes marketed for dogs contain alcohol as an antibacterial agent. Alcohol dries out already-stressed skin. Skip it. You don’t need antibacterial agents for routine cleaning — you need something gentle and effective.
I go through a lot of wipes. Buying in bulk is worth it. I keep them at the diaper station next to the Vaseline and a fresh stack of diapers — so the whole routine is in one place and takes a couple of minutes rather than an expedition.
